Education

Interventions by AFFCAD under the Education programming component provide opportunities for Kampala,s slum children and youth to access quality formal education.AFFCAD strives to ensure that every child achieves the right to education and quality learning opportunities from early childhood to adolescence despite the existence of a ranfe of barriers that include; poverty, gender discrimination, dissability, low quality teaching schools, disruption from violence at home and in schools and other shocks that prevent children from learning. AFFCAD aims at offering an opportunity to vulnerable children and youths from Uganda city Slums by ensuring their enrolment and completion of primary, secondary and tertiary education. Achievements In June 2013 AFFCAD established a community nursery and primary school called Excel Education Center that has since been named AFFCAD School. In the heart of Bwaise, the school is designed to provide decent and quality education to ophans and other vulnerable children in slum areas, including those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. Since its establishment the school has provided education to over 300 children.

Economic empowerment

The overall Objective of AFFCAD's Economic Empowerment program area is to increase access to sustainable employment opportunities for youths including those living with disabilitiesin slums of Uganda. This will ensure that disadvantaged youths in targeted slums are economically empowered to engage in viable employment for sustainable livelihoods, especially the youth with limited formal or no formal education, and those living with disabilities. The program adresses a mismatch between market demands and actual youth skills through a special focus on provision of marketable vocational skills training to out of school youths including youths with dissabilities. Vocational skills training is supplemented with soft or life skills development, financial literacy and linkages to financial institutions. Achievements In January 2013 AFFCAD established AFFCAD Business and Vocational Institute (ABVI) that has offered vocational skills to over 3,000 youth. To date, the institution has graduated over 3,000 youth with funding from various donors including the European Union. The average completion rate is 90% and 85% of the youth majority being girls have found descent jobs while at least 20% started their own businesses. Over 600 youth have received start-up capital and kits enabling them to start and run their own businesses. At least 100 women have been trained in business skills and given start-up capital.

Health

AFFCAD Health Program focuses on making interventions in areas of Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), Nutrition, Mental Health and Drug and Substance abuse. AFFCAD conducted Social Behavioral Change activities around these key areas in health by engaging different stakeholders at all levels among others to increase young people's access to quality health care and wellbeing. Achievements AFFCAD has supported over 1000 adolscent girls with access to medical services through medical camps, counscelling and provided them with Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) information. AFFCAD has distributed over 34,000 condoms to out of school youth in slum areas Over 3000 young people have been reached through SRHR activities AFFCAD has rehabilited sex workers by providing them with vocational skills to set up their own businesses AFFCAD has tested over 300 youth for HIV.

COVID-19 RELIEF PROGRAM

We recently mapped out 1500 most vulnerable households affected by COVID-19 in the slum areas of Bwaise II, Bwaise III and Kyebando in Kawempe Division, Kampala, Uganda and almost 80% of the people living in these slums expressed the need for food relief due to the 42-day lockdown imposed by the government to curb the 2nd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown has taken a toll on income earners since many of them especially single mothers have lost their jobs and businesses and 70% of the residents in the above villages are experiencing food insecurity with some going days without eating anything. Many of the households in slum areas do not possess a handwashing facility or constant supply of water and soap and yet hand washing is one of the preventive measures of curbing COVID-19. ADVOCACY

AFFCAD creates a platform for effective engagement of stakeholders at all levels to adress isseues affecting the youths through bridging the existing gap among caregivers, dervice providers and the policy makers to ensure that our primamry beneficiaries' are heard.
