AFFCAD Economic Empowerment Program

We’re creating opportunities for young Ugandans by reducing the mismatch between their skills and market demands.

Financial poverty in Uganda is worse in unplanned areas like Bwaise, Kampala, which have extremely high population densities and bleak employment outcomes. Local economies hardly offer sustainable job opportunities, and many young people lack the employability to make a living. Many run small shops instead, but do so without any formal education or business skills training.

Our Goal

The AFFCAD Economic Empowerment Program aims to bridge the income skills gap in Kampala by providing disadvantaged youths—including those with disabilities—with vocational and soft skills training, as well as financial literacy.

We also strive to nurture young entrepreneurs by providing them with the knowledge, business equipment and startup capital they need to succeed.

AFFCAD Business and Vocational Institute

AFFCAD Business and Vocational Institute (ABVI) has been providing disadvantaged youths with marketable vocational skills since 2013.

The ABVI offers young Ugandans the chance to join the life-changing Youth Entrepreneurship and Employability Skills Plus (YEES+) Scheme, which trains them to know their own strengths, avoid recklessly diving into new business ideas, and build strong networks of supportive others.

With an average graduation rate of 90%, the ABVI has economically empowered over 6,000 youths—the majority of whom have been vulnerable young women—to be able to meet their financial needs.

These youths develop money saving mindsets and the ability to make wiser investments. They gain the knowledge and skills to retain sustainable livelihoods, despite unexpected challenges like COVID-19.

Startup Success

The Strengthening Social Cohesion and Stability (SSCoS) Kampala Project has equipped AFFCAD with the resources to build more cohesive and peaceful communities and counter violent extremism through sustainable livelihoods.

Through the project, over 200 youths have started active businesses through startup toolkits and entrepreneurship training in skills like leadership and business acumen.
