AFFCAD supported the formation of two ‘Village Savings and Loan Associations’ (VSLAs) within the Bwaise community: Eyeterekera Savings Group (for the youth) and Teachers Savings Club (for the teachers at three community schools in Bwaise).
The two groups were formed as part of the Social Action Projects (SAPs) under the British Council Active Citizens Program, to economically boost members and assist them in case of financial emergencies. This model is meant to be replicated by other members within the Bwaise community, to boost them economically.
Village Savings and Loan Associations provide sustainable and profitable financial services to members of the community. They provide people with a safe space to save their money and acquire small loans in case of financial emergencies. These lending associations help build social capital within communities.
‘Through the Village Savings and Loan Association group, Eyeterekela Savings Group, I have been able to save money, and I hope to use that money to scale up my catering business. It is because of this project, that I’ve been encouraged to reach out to the youth in my area, form more savings groups, and reach out to the community with information on home learning and child safeguarding.’
– Mutesasira Robert, Active Citizen and Chairperson, Eyeterekera Savings Group
