Promoting Early Childhood Development Through a Two-Generation Approach

Creating the best start in life for every child begins with strengthening the families and systems that support them. Guided by this principle, AFFCAD, in partnership with Kandaakiat Organization for Women Empowerment and Development (KOWED), convened a multi-sectoral capacity-building workshop on the Two-Generation (2-Gen) Model for Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) on 30 June 2026 in Mukono Municipality.

Supported through the Local Coalition Accelerator (LCA-Uganda) with funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the workshop brought together more than 40 stakeholders from the health, education, and community sectors, including government officials, Village Health Teams (VHTs), refugee representatives, teachers, health professionals, and community leaders.

Participants explored how the Two-Generation approach strengthens early childhood development by supporting both young children and their caregivers. The discussions highlighted the importance of child development, caregiver economic and emotional wellbeing, positive parenting, safe and protective family environments, and stronger collaboration across sectors to deliver holistic ECCD services.

By the end of the workshop, participants had identified effective actions to improve coordination between health, education, and community structures, demonstrating a shared commitment to ensuring that every child grows up in a nurturing space where both children and their caregivers can live healthy and productive lives.
